They’re coming to take me away

Ah, those goofy tunes from my youth! They provide me with so many wonderful blog post titles. I’m up and at ’em early this morning on a topical topic. That is, a level of misinformation or lack thereof that can be cleared up quickly. And it should make people worry less that “they’re coming to take me away.”

Okay, we’re ready to go! This is about propaganda. Because examples of using propaganda for personal or political gain are everywhere, we’ll narrow it down. Today, we’re talking about the National Rifle Association.

Here is the propaganda claim: They’re coming to take away your guns. To do that, they will take away the 2nd Amendment.

But the absolute proof to that lie is in the Articles of the Constitution. These actually are the Constitution. That’s very important to understand to start. Because many people confuse this and think the Constitution starts with free speech.

In fact, all those items people talk about as “The Constitution says that…” are usually all amendments. Let’s be clear on the definition of amendment:  the process of altering or amending a law or document.

So, now, here’s where we stand so far:

– The Constitution, in its original form, was 7 Articles (associated with the form and structure of America’s government)

– Everything since, are amendments to the Constitution.

Now let’s deconstruct the propaganda about “removing” the 2nd Amendment.

In order to change or supersede a previous amendment, Article 5 of the Constitution creates the process to do so. Here are the requirements:

– 2/3 of the House of Representatives must agree

– 2/3 of the Senate must agree

– 3/4 of the States must agree

Note: All three must happen for an amendment to be enacted or changed.

Now, let’s take a look at where we are in 2018:

– There are 435 members of the House; 2/3 of that would be 290. Democrats currently have 193.

– There are 100 members of the Senate; 2/3 of that would be 66. Democrats currently have 49.

– There are 50 State governors; 3/4 of that would be 37. Democrats currently have 16.

Not only do Democrats not have enough members to “take away your 2nd Amendment rights”, they don’t even have enough to win any part of the necessary votes!

So, to be clear, there is no way anyone is changing the constitution anytime soon. Not 2nd Amendment. Not any amendment. In fact, it’s only been done once: the 18th amendment which prohibited drinking was superseded by the 21st amendment (and don’t all those sports bars appreciate that).

The NRA is feeding you a line. They would rather you be scared of any change than to consider small improvements that, while maybe making America safer, sure wouldn’t help their real reason for existence, the gun manufacturers.

Better background checks, higher age limits and/or banning assault-style weapons have no impact whatsoever on the 2nd Amendment. Now or ever. Because that’s simply not how the Constitution works.

Look it up yourself, if you are really curious. In the meantime, don’t freak out over scared students and angry parents demanding more gun controls. No one can, or is going to, take away the 2nd Amendment.

And nothing in those cries for help should make you or your guns think that “they’re coming to take me away.”
