New year, new look?

Nah, despite what the picture shows, I don’t think that hairstyle is going to have the ladies flocking. If, for no other reason, I just don’t have that much hair. But I was thinking my first blog post in January should represent a new year, new look.

I’m pretty turtle speed when it comes to website updates and design. As such, you readers can go months (or years) without seeing any changes to the looks.

That’s not how “real” websites work, but plenty of blogs are pretty stiff like mine. Just words and sometimes no pictures at all. So, at least I’m trying!

Just like in 2001: A Space Odyssey – I move very slowly

I’ve tried in the past to spruce up the posts. Mostly by occasional graphics. Then, I began adding links. Finally, I changed the links from sending you to another page to just having to hit the “back” button.

Now, I’m pondering a new change: adding  graphics to my links. It’s not a big deal and many other websites already do it. Although, it would be more work for me and, as regular readers know, more work and me doesn’t…er…work.

Still, WordPress (the app I write and publish these posts within) does a good enough job recommending “related” posts. Granted, sometimes I can’t see the relation, but, hey, that’s probably true with a number of relatives.

And I’ve not yet included any outbound links on my posts. For one thing, I’m not sure it’s legal. Yeah, I know most people on social media and the internet don’t seem too concerned about publishing rights. Call me a rebel. I like lawfulness.

So, about all I’ve got left is more graphics. Will it work? Or will it just annoy you? With the massive readership I’ve got, I’m sure I’ll be inundated soon enough.

Here’s how I’m seeing it (if you haven’t already figured it out). Anytime I have a link to a specific post I think you should read, I’ll throw an image off to the side of my blathering. I’ll probably just include the image from the original post.

If it’s an actual link (as opposed to just a random graphic), it will have some italicized caption.

I’m debating how to attach the link. I can have the picture be the “click” trigger or I can have it link to the caption. For starters, I’ll attach to the image. Clicking on that will bring up the “required readings”.

Some posts, early on in my blogging days, didn’t have any graphics. Again, I’m undecided how to go there. I can just put up a generic image of the website or come up with a new picture. I’ll play that one by ear.

Have I told you this one before?

In most cases, it probably won’t matter, since I don’t do links all that often. But, as I’ve been doing this for 8 years and 1,000 posts, the chances continue to increase there’s some background info floating around.

Of course, most of the time, it’s just me repeating myself. I’m like that older relative who keeps telling you the same story every time you visit.

Yeah, that’s me all right. Why don’t you call more often?

In the meantime, all eleven of you can let me know what you think about my new year, new look.

Reader two of eleven here, I agree with Steve. I read the posts and just a courtesy glance at the pictures. I’m not sure I have actually clicked on any of the links. Just my $0.02.

Are you two kidding me?? You’re saying all that work I go into finding *just* the right image for each blog is wasted on you? Have you no romance in your souls?

Oh, wait, look who I’m asking. Don’t forget to return the green skin and wrinkles to Dr. Seuss when you’re done.
